Sony has today posted an 11-minute video detailing everything there is to know about the all-new PlayStation 5 user interface. Taking the form of a State of Play presentation, the Japanese giant takes a deep dive into a completely new set of features.
Sony has gone very big on putting as much information upfront as possible. With the touch of a button, you can cycle through integrated news pieces from your favourite games, recently captured screenshots, and what Sony is dubbing "Activities". This is a feature we've heard about for months now as they give you a good indicator of whereabouts you are in a level and how many more minutes it'll take to complete it. You can even check out the objectives you have left to complete.
Elsewhere, the rumoured in-game tips system is revealed to be an actual thing. You can pin hints and guides to your screen to help you out in a sticky situation. Then we touch on the Create button, which is demonstrated via Photo Mode in Destruction AllStars. You can snap images in real-time and send them to friendship groups.
Back on the home screen, an Explore tab will keep you up to date with all the latest news from Sony (available only in the US at launch) while the PlayStation Store is now fully integrated into the system. It's no longer a separate app like on PlayStation 4.
So, what do you make of this introduction to the PS5 UI? Are you a fan or do you not like it? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Do I watch it, or wait until the 19th for the full surprise. I can't decide.
I love how Sony just drop what they want when they want, baller
Damn, that is slick. I love all of the progress info that's instantly available.
Don't need quick resume cos everything opens so fast
Is it just me or does Control Centre look like it just gets in the way of playing a game? In fact most of this demonstration felt that way.
Looks buttery smooth lol. Was a very nice surprise when I turned my computer on a few minutes ago. 4 more weeks!!!
So, we’re actually playing a to do list now?
Meh. Nothing exciting.
Some of this stuff is insanely cool.
don't like it but whatever, as long as it stays quick and responsive, I don't care about the shell and add on functions garbage
@ankehuber They're showing the UI, which is what everyone has wanted to see for months and months now.
If you just want to play the game, then you just load the game and forget about the UI.
Hmmm... the control centre thing just looks like an absolute annoyance and its huge as well. I did laugh at " we at Playstation want to make it easier to chat with friends" after the absolute dumpster fire of yesterdays update.
I was never fussed about the UI, but now they've shown it - it means the PS5 IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH! Need something good to happen this year. This is it!
A lot of social features that might slow the console in the future but not a time log to know how long have you play the game
There you go people there's the UI you can stop whinning now XD
Some great stuff in there, lots of it I won't use but still great to see. I personally like the addition of the trophy progression which we knew was coming but to know how many more collectables etc we need or how many more matches to grind for a trophy is a real plus for me!
wow looking good
@GKO900 Thankfully I have ZERO people on my Friends List and game completely solo/privately.
I am just hoping it is as fast/smooth as they showed. My PS4 Pro tends to lag in the UI quite a bit.
I was just about to start watching and I was called for a meeting. Feckin timing.
@get2sammyb good point
There's me just bitter I've got no friends to chat or pose for selfies with.
My expectations
Looks like they combined the Steam overlay with the Xbox One dashboard.
@Brutal what the?! Is that genuine?
Best things
1. Dualsense mic - talk to text, talk to friends etc.
2. New better, faster PS Store
3. Designed with 4k tvs in mind. Forward thinking - 4k adoption rate will be miles higher by the time most people have a PS5.
4. Trophy progression updates.
5. Main menu (finally) natively supports HDR straight out of the box
6. SPEED
That looks great. Especially loved the progress tracker on the trophies, though I wish they would have shown us more of that.
The purist in me was initially put off by the screen in screen video help, but then I realised that everyone has internet on their phone now so...whatever. Might be useful for tips on hard sections.
I don’t see myself jumping between games as I don’t play in parties (have no gamer friends at my age), but I can see how useful that is.
I can also see how it’s useful for Sony to lock some features behind PS Plus, but I’ll be disappointed if PS Now doesn’t also make you eligible.
All in all, I’m impressed!
Did everyone actually watch the video? Some of the things mentioned are a huge deal to a lot of gamers. I absolutely hate getting stuck in a level and having to look up solutions online and encountering spoilers.
Would love to see more on the trophy progression, that's got to be one of the best additions for me.
@phil_j Tbh, it's cool but nothing mind blowing
@naruball Excited for this. I love having information presented to me. Especially now that I have to adult and don't have all the time in the world. It's nice knowing where I am and what I'm doing game wise.
Burger King teased this was happening today and nobody believed it 😂 🍔, Sony love messing with the masses!
Very happy to see games & media have their own pages now, was a bit annoying having all that stuff mixed together the PS4.
@MightyDemon82 I think it was more that people didn't believe that it was going to be "PS5 UI, Presented By Burger King. Have It Your Way", which to be fair, this isn't lol.
@phil_j
I have the same decision to make. I forwarded the video to friends, but havn't watched it myself, lol.
@thejameswhogames I'll probably use a huge chunk of it regularly. Much better having a control centre, than have the PS button take you back out to the main PS screen.
Looks a bit cluttered. All of those cards. Why not have a single menu instead of a long line of cards. Also it's a bit similar to the UI of the PS4. Was hoping for something different and revolutionary instead of minor evolution.
@phil_j That’s what I’ve been saying. We are so close now, it would be pretty cool to experience it for the first time at home.
nice first look. I hope they can make temporary parties or something to shore that part up. it’s funny how Sony says things like “we are running out of time” when they could just livestream someone using a PS5 from now until launch and people would watch. There are no length limitations in digital media.
Love what I saw, the PiP of the game share and the help stuff is really cool, I love that PS Store is now integrated, etc. They seem to already be a long way toward their stated objective of making it as easy as possible for the player to actually play.
I love it. The share screen option is a great idea. Also, the feature that helps you if you're stuck in a game will be so useful for me.
It looks nice!
This looks really great, I love the help thing
@Keyblade-Dan Well, you'd think so, but as these comments show, some are just never happy.
@get2sammyb Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is showing on the PS Store so that mean pre-order go live soon ??
@Brutal Would ve nice, vut I've ordered from Argos and only got that email about the accessories.
"Today we are finally going to give you a look at the PlayStation 5 user experience."
Even Sony realizes it's been a bit slow.
@ankehuber it probably isn't just you, but actually it's the opposite. They were showing control center, not gameplay, control center gets you to the gameplay you want quicker. It's a neat feature, and it looks super stylish in it's finished state. All we need now are some State of Plays on the games and we're golden.
It looks a bit weird and ungainly to me but I always think that about everything until I'm used to it. I'm not blown away though. I like the idea of being able to find tips without spoilers since I get really annoyed when I'm stuck and look for tips and it's in a massive spoiler-filled post. Other than that, it's just a bunch of stuff I'll never do and will probably irritate me.
Looks super clean. I really like it.
That's WAY better than I expected.
What?? Nicee, watching it now 😃
@TheIdleCritic @ankehuber @icey664 I assure you all it is legit, my friend forwarded me the email and i trimmed it. The email from Argos was real, UK release date now 12th. Anyone else preorder PS5 from Argos? Check your emails...
EDIT: I'm beginning to doubt myself now...
Sackboy looks AMAZING on my new 4K SONY TV while watching that It looks really cool to that UI to + there looks like way more features to, that wasn't shown to + I thought that Sackboy beginning was just a Theme to Was cool it was the game. Hmm, is it November yet?!?!
@icey664 My friend got the email, there was 3 in 1. 1 mentioned his controller, 1 mention his charging dock, and the 3rd mentioned the console. I have preordered elsewhere and have heard nothing myself.
It looks cool but where was the trophy system even at? I didn't see it on that main menu. I dont know if it was buried off somewhere and i couldn't see or I just missed it.
That startup sounds nostalgic for some reason
😄-I would love to know if you can change the (look) and (sound) in the (start up screen).
😄-I would like to change the sound on the start up screen of the PS5, to the Original PS1 start up screen sound, it would sound awesome booting PS5 up with it!
@Ashina 😃-Yeah me too, it kinda sounds a little like the PS2.
I am pleasantly surprised by most of this. The pin-able (picture-in-picture) cards are a nice touch. The social features don't appear to be in your face; but I would really like those cards in game to be about half that size. They take up way too much space.
@thejameswhogames Just don't go to the control centre... Although, I suppose you can still see on the main screen. Hopefully, there'll be options for customisation, yeah.
Neat. 99% of it will go unused in this household, but for those social people, this is pretty cool stuff.
Glad the Home screen is still a familiar experience - it will be helpful for those non-gamers in my home that are used to using the PS4 for streaming.
Wow...now that is innovation on display.
I know I've been really harsh on Sony of late.. but this is stunning. This is what we've been crying out for, for months.
Slicker than a greased weasel sliding down some glass covered in baby oil - amazing
@solocapers Xbot fanboy detected
Okay, where are my Folders?
At the risk of sounding like an old man..... I just want to play games. They said in the presentation that they want to remove barriers to gameplay, but I really don't want notifications, picture in picture of my friend's games, news stories and what are basically ads popping up everywhere. It's just all too much and I would hate to play something like GoW with all this going on.
Oh and Destruction All-stars still looks like a binbag full of chod.
@Brutal My best mate ordered from Argos and he hasnt had any emails like that yet. Mines is with Game and it still says 19th Nov, hopefully it can be confirmed one way or the other pretty soon, but would be nice if it was true.
No doubts about it,definitely a change up! I like the trophy tracking feature,& though obviously tied into keeping up ps plus, but an interesting addition about the hints system...come a long way from ringing someone up on the playstation tips line back on ps1!
Hopefully see a bit more about how games/folders are displayed before long.
@Friendly we always have been...
@JinxMax really dude? I've had one Xbox console (360) and I've no intention of getting a series X or S and have my ps5 pre ordered.
Just because nothing excited me about the UI other than it being slick which was always gonna be a given with new hardware that makes me a Xbox fan boy? Idiotic comment.
I'm sorry I forgot about the memo to fawn over every PS reveal as if it's the greatest thing ever.
Can you write an article to explain each feature with photos please? Thanks.
Looks cool.that was impressive that ssd speed is remarkable.the ui is revealed.people was complaining about it.me i like surprised.i would wait for the reveal.its all good.word up son
While I probably won't use 90% of these features, i have to praise Sony for continuing to be innovative.
Some cool little features in there, looking forward for more information about the UI in coming weeks, hopefully Sony do something like this each week to the run up of launch now, get everyone even more excited
It looks to me that when you start up from rest mode your game is displayed on entry in pause mode as the background. It didn't look like there was any action to enter the game as is the case with suspend mode on PS4. Thats pretty cool if its the case. You are basically skipping the whole UI on start up.
Looks very slick, and a natural evolution of the PS4 UI which I already really liked. It'll be interesting to see how much of an effect themes have on the UI though as there seems to be a little less room for customization, maybe.
I have contacted Argos for confirmation.
@Brutal The grammar and overall layout on that image is a very suspect, doesn't look genuine to me. Good luck though.
It made me want to play sackboy even more 😀
Like the multiplayer stuff. Also that the Media has a section. Never use it - so can just focus on games.
Nicely done.
I always have my status to appear offline so hopefully none of that friend game sharing stuff or party notifications come up when doing so. Leave this grump alone to play his games in peace please.
Argos got back to me, they say its BS. Sorry all.
Love the look of the UI and very excited for Nov 19th.
Also love the trolling of Sony with Destruction Allstars - a new IP exclusive releasing on day one for PS5 and we haven't had a single gameplay video about it. "Let's start up a game, and then take one screenshot before we step into the car...."
@Friendly We've been doing that with Ubisoft games for years.
Finally is right but I like it. Not just look more ways to talk to people and stream when I have no desire to do either. Some features I think I could use there.
@redd214 ... 4 more years! 4 more ... wait, never mind.
Looks awesome! My favorite features are:
Also, home page reminds me of Windows. Well done, Sony, best PlayStation UI yet.
@phil_j launch day consoles are known to go through a couple UX changes within the first few months... I expect when gamers get their hands on this and start using the features we’ll see even more streamlined changes!!
Looks awful messy and cluttered to me but as others noted, it's new so could just take some getting accustomed to. I really hope there's options to customize what all is displayed but knowing it's a game console I know that's not likely. But a minimalist can dream.
Oh no I complained and ruined someone's life I'm sure.
Wow, I was honestly expecting something completely different. This UI is so outdated and poorly designed, I had to check the source to make sure this video was real. All they've done is copied aspects of the Xbox One UI(from 2-3 updates ago) and put a heavy focus on holding the hands of children/very dumb people for a reason I cannot comprehend. Video games are already too easy these days and they have decided to focus the UI on making them easier? Why? Absolutely out-of-touch.
There's nothing new here, nothing revolutionary, nothing innovative, nothing of any interest. I am so disappointed in Sony/Playstation, they should not have put so much emphasis on the UI if this is all it is. There is absolutely no reason we couldn't have seen this back in August.
@710King dear God, you're negative.
@naruball Only when there is something to be negative about. If they'd made a good UI I'd be praising it.
@naruball People like that I put on ignore on the spot. Especially when the majority of their comments are negative and have nothing good to say about anything. It's his opinion, regardless on how baseless it is.
Really enjoyed the features, it all looks so vibrant. The help feature for me is great, as it will save me having to go on Youtube to search for a related trophy every 5 seconds
Plus I also love how you can jump straight into the game from the home screen. I pretty much loved everything I saw & I for one am a happy camper
I think it's brilliant. It makes the PS4 and even Xbox Series X UI look out of date and basic, which is exactly what a new gen should do - more features, more options, more speed and all wrapped up in a pretty interface.
Sony killed it imo.
@ankehuber but you can just play the game?
I really like it nice & clean! as it matures it will get even better we all know this who have had many consoles so...
@710King complete overreaction & overly negative.
help is out of touch? youtube help videos & all the views they get daily beg to differ.
@InsertUsername Yeah, I think that's actually a good idea. He and the other guy who keeps bringing up PC in every post are best ignored.
I didn't like the narrator, too cheesy and sugary, like they are trying to explain it to children, just give me facts.
I want to see what it looks like when a trophy pops!
It looks incredible. A perfect evolution on groundwork laid by the ps3 and ps4. This seems like what they have always been striving to achieve in both a clean and fast interface. I am excited to see what else is baked into the UI. I cannot wait to get this thing into my hands.
@johncalmc What is difficult about it?
@naruball He is going too ignore you now what will you do. 😆
@solocapers Its slick what else do you want from a UI?
1) That was awesome, really love the look of this UI!
2) Does this mean Ratchet and Clank is going to be available to buy on store at launch?! Can't find a solid release date anywhere!
I don't understand why people are complaining about this because they don't need the features it brings. If you aren't going to use the features then don't use the control center. What they did was program a button to access things like news, personal play, and community, if you don't like this stuff then don't press the button, these parts aren't forced into your screen.
Also, while not mentioned yet, the cards may be customizable, they are cards like in a players hand and you can discard or add cards to customize your gameplay.
Only addition I do like is the Guide section. So I don't have to get the Laptop out in case I get stuck.
@Flaming_Kaiser it didn't look particularly pleasing on the eye. Sure it's glitzy but it seemed a bit disorganised to me..it's hard to tell with what little we seen but it looks a little cluttered.
Month to go so hopefully once we're hands on it'll make more sense from a user perspective.
Looks a bit overcomplicated to me but will wait until I have it to know for sure.
@RicksReflection
I fully agree.
The PS1 boot sequence was the most magical boot sequence ever conceived.
The PS2 would be a close second and the Gamcube in third.
@get2sammyb Everyone?????
I skipped through most of that, it was so boring. The UI was probably the last bit of info i wanted.
I launch a game and i play.
I has raised the question of do i have to waste time logging in everytime i turn it on like he did.
Also this thing will suck so much power it's going off unless i'm downloading, no rest mode for me.
@solocapers @Flaming_Kaiser Totally Agreed. Take a look at the Xbox UI. It is a cluttered mess that looks almost identical to last gen (I have one on preorder as well, so I’m not an Xbox hater by any means). But that is a UI that leaves much to be desired. I will take what the ps5 is offering over that any day of the week. I think this has tons of potential (especially if the card deck is customizable).
Overall i'd say it looked pretty good. It seemed...I don't know...unfinished? I feel like they glossed over things pretty quickly without showing much detail. The PS4 reveal showed everything in great detail comparatively speaking. What features they did show, they didn't show how they worked with much detail.
It looks very clean and nice. I like it a lot.
Some really positive stuff here but one major concern about the in-game help. They state it is locked behind PS Plus membership which 1) makes it an accessibility feature that is only accessible behind a paywall and 2) looks most suitable for my kids who play on sub accounts that don’t have PS Plus subscriptions. So will they make it a feature accessible by sub-accounts? Cutting out a major demographic for this feature if not.
NookStation 5. Keeps track of your Miles. Encourages a relentless stream of menial tasks for point based rewards.
Some cool features in there though, and it's lovely they finally got rid of a "dedicated" home screen while in game, leaving Nintendo the last holdout in that regard.
Some of the features are useless to me (sharing pics and etc) but damn the UI looks clean and cool. Can't wait for the 19th !!!!
@CKFilms The fact that the characters feet clip through the floor was enough
@TheRedComet 😄-Yeah right! I loved the sound of the PS1 boot sequence, if you listen to the PS5's it does sound kinda like the PS2's boot sequence, along with the sounds the button presses make. 😄-Sounds cool!
Not a fan of the in-game help system being limited to "some games" where the developer bothered to put it in and being PS-Plus only. Streamers assemble! Please continue recording your gameplay so I may use it as a walkthrough.
The cards are nice but I hope they stay out of the way unless I actively open them. It's gonna get old real quick if I quick-load a game and then have to x out of so many cards.
@MightyDemon82 to be fair, the king is pretty sneaky...
Looking forward to comparing my User experince from PS4 to PS5 with Spider-man
My first impression is that it all sort of looks ok and has some interesting and usefull features. How it all will finally look and function is still not known. The help feature could be a usefull addition to youtube and web searches.
My only initial dislike may be fixed with my desire of options to customize the ui. Like an option for size like to have the icons at the bottom displayed larger.
Good: Finally getting a look at the PS5 ui.
Bad: The voice of the first guy as i could not understand him.
Ugly: The voice of the second guy. Yikes!
Nothing revolutionary, but it's a change so, meh. Plus I'm glad they've gone away from the blue theme and gave it that monochrome look.
The cards UI looks nice and accessible, but I think there are going to be a lot of people squinting at the tiny game tiles on the home screen…
@NoCode23
Right there with you on the second guy. They should have got Keanu Reeves to do it.
@JoshuaTChandler Could just listen to what he's saying, and simply not worry about how he says it. It's not that big of a deal. Lol.
